The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh and members of the Indonesian community in Cambodia have joined forces to give the Indonesia-Cambodia Friendship Primary and Secondary School in Prey Veng province a facelift.

The event signifies an important contribution to the local community, as both countries celebrate the 65th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations and the 79th anniversary of Indonesian independence.

The re-inauguration ceremony of the newly renovated school was held on Saturday.

In attendance were Santo Darmosumarto, the Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia, Suon Somalin, the Governor of Prey Veng, and Tonn Sa Im, Under Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

Also present at the inauguration were donors from the Indonesian community, including representatives of Indonesian businesses.

Santo Darmosumarto, the Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia addressed the audience, saying, “The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh and the Indonesian community in Cambodia are committed to ensuring that the students of the Indonesia-Cambodia Friendship Primary and Secondary School have the necessary facilities to conduct their studies. These students are the future of Indonesia-Cambodia cooperation.”

He added that the Indonesia-Cambodia diplomatic relations were established in 1959 with the signing of Treaty of Friendship between Indonesia and Cambodia, also noting that Indonesia celebrates its 79th Independence Day on August 17.

He said that renovating the school cost more than $34,000, and included provision of new school supplies, laboratory supplies, new furniture, restrooms, a reading area and a new school gate.

He added that the effort was entirely supported by kind donations from Embassy staff and members of the Indonesian community, who number almost 100,000 people in Cambodia.

“This joint effort by the Indonesian community is a testament to the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Cambodia, as the school was built with funds donated by the Indonesian Government in 1995. It has over 790 students ranging from kindergarten to secondary level,” he said.

He said that the Indonesian Embassy and community in Cambodia are holding a charity event that is expected to help fund better educational services at the school.

Arik Mintorogo, Chairman of the Indonesian Community Association in Cambodia said, “We are proud to be part of this meaningful project. Revitalising this school not only provides better educational facilities for students but also strengthens the bonds between the Indonesian community and our local, kind hosts”.

Somalin said that the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Indonesia shows the two countries have enjoyed excellent relations over the past seven decades.

He thanked both philanthropists and the Indonesian Embassy for donating $105,000 to renovate the school in Prey Veng province.

“I want to give thanks to the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, as well as the Indonesian community in Cambodia, for providing funds to renovate the Cambodia-Indonesia primary and Secondary School, to ensure we can improve the education sector in the Kingdom,” he said.
